Alex A Callender
Brooklyn, NY

ARTIST STATEMENT: For the past year I have been drawing deer. When I started reading about the symbolic life of deer I found that in almost all cultures, both indigenous and modern agricultural societies, deer are described mythologically as transient creatures that can be followed by humans and hunters to where the realm of life meets the world of the dead. The plane between these two places often existing in elusive and unnameable woods. In these drawings and photographs, trees, deer and birds are agents whom I employ to tell stories about power and struggle, both with one’s environments and one’s own self, as these characteres search for a sacred place in their home. I use charcoal, graphite, stencils and erasures to construct these images. The digital photographs are constructed in paper light boxes, simple theaters where I can layer translucent papers and manipulate lighting to create an image.
