ARTIST STATEMENT: It is important for me to have a self-generating practice, to set up situations I can respond to and form an immediate dialogue. I begin my current work with a single line, incising it slowly into the surface and following it intuitively, giving myself time to contemplate its direction and intention. It’s all unknown to me until it happens and a piece must be discovered in the making. Working on a black surface acts as a kind of non-space, a total emptiness where my mind can rest and be clear, allowing for a moment of pause, silence, reflection, and meditation. Yet, I’m interested in the dichotomy between this void and a certain bluntness of the surface, which feels like sandpaper or asphalt.
I often feel like I'm in a dialogue with the deepest recesses of my subconscious. It's as though I'm mapping my own visual thought process, forming constellations, puzzles, navigating mazes at the same time I'm creating them. The work references diagrams, folded pieces of paper, aerial views, perspectival spaces, or different kinds of gaming. I’m interested in games as systems and the visual structures resulting from their internal logic. In some ways I’m making abstract games with perhaps a more cryptic or idiosyncratic logic.
