ARTIST STATEMENT: I am compelled to document the people and environments around me, to try and make sense of an often-anarchic world by capturing small moments and personal encounters. By focusing on the familiar, larger themes of the human condition may come to light. As time passes and I see my children, family and friends age, I attempt to record the physical and psychological changes that occur, and will often use my own memories and experiences as a catalyst with which to imprint a point of view. Since the approach I take is similar with all my subjects (figurative, still-life), I hope - over time - for themes to emerge so that my work can be threaded together and viewed like chapters of a book. The confrontational nature of using a large format analog camera is a deliberate tool. and is something that both my subject and I need to reckon with. We are both, in a sense, collaborators in this highly vulnerable process. My images are not snapshots but I want them to feel that way, as I look for tension between what may be alluring and sensual yet also uncomfortable and challenging. Scale is important, and often a detail I was unable to see during a shoot reveals itself in the print. I want to take people and things that we see everyday, and make them larger than life. Since I am drawn toward the often-difficult process of how we expose ourselves to one another, I try and work intuitively -- encouraging feelings and emotional associations, rather than draw conclusions. By looking out from my perspective as a woman at a particular juncture in time, I wish to explore the meaning of identity, memory and home. -- Ilisa Katz Rissman
