Kim Carr Valdez
Brooklyn, NY

ARTIST STATEMENT: My most recent collection is composed from the debris off the sidewalks of Canal Street in Chinatown, New York where the counterfeit designer market thrives off bargain seeking tourists. My initial interest was merely the individual watch links I saw lying on the ground as I would come and go from work. Where was the rest of the watch? The more I looked I found there was more going on than just fake Rolexes and began compulsively picking up Coach, Louis Vuitton, keys from the suitcases vendors use, and most anything else shiny off of the dirty sidewalks. I would often pry objects out of the dirty crevices. Each item was like a prize or treasure because of its fallacy. At the end of the week I would empty out the contents of my purse- bag, date, then repeat. There is significant and tedious labor involved to create these works- collect, date, organize, scan the parts for documentation, and at times engrave. I sort similar items in groups, but am always aware that at times these items are oddly juxtaposed when I find them as in “Jesus with dolphins and disco balls” and “The virgin praying to the gods for guidance on fashion.” Other more major works “Watches, Watches” and “Have Coach, Will Travel” serve as documents for the quantity of trade over a duration of time. I experiment with the structure of how findings will be wired together allowing my hand to be present, using 22 and 24 gauge stainless steel wire as thread. The artworks at times refer to jewelry and adornment and are made in that language, but lack any true function or wearability. The results are meticulously handcrafted weavings and sculptures that bring order to chaos and beautify that which can be most ugly in human nature.
