Website: emilyrhall.com ARTIST STATEMENT: While looking out at the ocean, from a porch incased by a wrought iron
handrail in an old Southern city, I thought of this structural element
that protects me from falling off, bars me from the ocean, and
physically keeps me in my place yet, mentally my mind was a million
places in the horizon. Seashells washed onto shore offering tokens of
what was inside this vast expanse but they also were mysterious gifts
of what lay ahead in that horizon. These shells too were functional
protective barriers, keeping their inhabitants safe.
A scenic view fills the admirer with a myriad of feelings - longing for
what lies ahead, contemplation over the past, perhaps even fear for
the drop below. It is always a place for a moment of pause where one
looks inward while simultaneously looking outward. My work focuses on
the vast expanse in the horizon whether natural or built and explores
the details that create these seemingly open ended space- thinking of built structures as portraits and physical manifestations of wishful thinking.
