ARTIST STATEMENT: Zeljka Blaksic aka Gita blak is a visual artist based in Brooklyn, NY and originally from Zagreb, Croatia. She works across multiple disciplines but the constants in her practice are 16mm film, video, performance and sculpture. Her inspiration often stems from the sub-culture of the 1990s-era in Croatia, when punk, anarcho and eco movements were having a renewal. This experimental environment became a university of rebellion–a key force, giving voice to new expressions of democracy, justice, common values and free speech. Recent exhibitions include Herzliya Museum of Contemporary Art, IL; District Kunst Gallery, DE; Gallery Augusta, FI; AIR Gallery, NY; Active Space, NY; Urban Festival in Croatia; Art Gallery of SESI, Sao Paolo, BR; The Kitchen, NY; The Khyber Centre for the Arts, CA. She was also a recipient of 2014/15 AIR Gallery Fellowship in New York, The District Kunst Award in Berlin; Paula Rhodes Award in New York City and many others. Zeljka received her MFA from the School of Visual Arts, Video and Related Media Department in 2010.
