Joseph J Laurro
Brooklyn, NY
Neighborhood: Ditmas Park

ARTIST STATEMENT: "Art making has always been my place of refuge and exploration, a place I found anything possible. I did not always know what it would look like, but I knew I could do it. Painting for me is visceral. There is an intuitive response in the process I find very challenging. Often lyrical, images are developed along with the re-contextualized and imaginary. My love for nature, animals, the ocean and dance are never far from hand. Oil, enamel, flashe paints, printing ink, graphite & charcoal are among some of my materials." Joseph Laurro received his BFA in Painting from the State University of NY at New Paltz, and studied Painting/Drawing and Photography in Rochester, NY. He has worked and called Brooklyn, NY "home" for nearly 25 years. Along side art making, you'll find Joseph in Afro-Caribbean dance classes at Mark Morris Dance Group Studio's. As a dance enthusiast, Laurro believes dance and movement have been an integral part of the creative process and what "keeps the energy moving!" In 2013 Joseph's paintings were chosen for Curate NYC. His work was also featured by Rachael Thomas, the Senior Curator/Head of Exhibitions of the Irish Museum of Modern Art (Dublin), and by Chief Curator, Rebecca Wilson for Saatchi Art. In 2014 Joseph was interviewed for Brooklyn Independent Media (BRIC) "On Air" with Sheba Legend. He has exhibited locally and nationally, including; The Mercer Gallery, Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art, Collette Blanchard Gallery, Greenpoint Gallery and Local Projects. He remains committed to art-making and the idea that the arts are a vital, necessity in communities & a healthy world. Recently, Mr. Laurro has enjoyed working as a guest Teaching-Artist in the NYC schools.
