Victoria Beerman
Brooklyn, NY
Neighborhood: Kensington

ARTIST STATEMENT: I am an emerging book & mixed media artist. I am also an avid blogger and designer. My primary inspiration is the natural world. I especially enjoy paying keen attention to the wilderness found in urban environments, such as Prospect Park. My work usually begins with journal entries written from the field notes and sketches I make as I move through my environment, be it a city park or a national park. I regularly spend my vacation time as a volunteer trail worker in national parks across America. I also create hand-painted artisanal silk scarves under the label victoriab:design.

I have taken classes at Columbus College of Art & Design, Center for Book Arts in NY, the Lower East Side Print Shop, Women's Studio Workshop, Arrowmont School of Arts & Crafts, Dieu Donné Papermill, Robert Blackburn Printmaking Studio, and Ohio University Lancaster. I have explored a wide variety of artistic mediums such as bookbinding, papermaking, printmaking, letterpress, ceramics, encaustic and surface design. I studied graphic design at Pratt Manhattan, and have exhibited my work there, at the Uzi NY Gallery, and at the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition (BWAC) shows. I created a sketchbook for the 2015 Sketchbook Project. As a student my work was included in the Ohio Governor's Youth Art Exhibition.

While I do work with other art forms using mixed media, I find the book arts provide an endlessly flexible framework which allows me to incorporate multiple art techniques and personal interests — including graphic design — which is one of the creative ways I earn my living.
