ARTIST STATEMENT: Using an array of mediums from graphite to acrylic paints, I bring a whimsical outlook on soccer to two-dimensional surfaces. My work attempts to bridge the gap between life and the sport by transforming familiar places and people into surreal entities. By finding unexpected elements in seemingly ordinary subjects, I lead viewers on an engaging tour of a sport that, despite its growing popularity in the U.S., remains largely overshadowed by the likes of baseball and “American” football.
My goal as an artist is a reflection of my goal as a journalist – to shed a different, perhaps fantastical light on the sport, and to reflect the way I see, hear, and feel the game. Though it may seem at first glance that my work is geared more toward die-hard soccer fans, I am certain that anyone who enjoys watching or playing a different sport can find emotional, psychological, and satirical parallels. Even the viewer who has never watched or participated in a sport in his life can be mesmerized by the intricate, architectural wonders that are soccer stadiums, wandering aimlessly through their mysterious interiors and wondering why so many of their facades are reminiscent of other structures or objects. I hope that all of my work enlightens the viewer and changes the way he or she looks at soccer and at all sports in general.
