ARTIST STATEMENT: Ghosts are the inspiration for most of my work. Ghosts, a haunting sensation, the idea of a return, and the presence of absence are what I continually respond to. Lull and Splendor is a record of my negotiation between the bookends of the past and present. The haunting weight of history on the present moment anchors my artistic practice. The photographs depict solitary figures submerged in vast, sprawling landscapes. In frozen moments, culled from the continuous flow of time, these figures are engaged in the discipline of waiting, of anticipation. The ghosts I was raised by speak to the sentiments of these photographs. Negotiation between history, memory, and the present moment is a reconciliation with which every individual is tasked yet it is inherently solitary and lonely. These scenes portray figures in conversation with the invisible contents of memory, of places and people no longer present. Quiet and lonesome, the subjects exist in moments where the absence of someone is so tangible as to constitute a separate presence. These figures, like photographs themselves, function as surrogates for memory: the ephemeral made concrete in a finite but fleeting instant.
