ARTIST STATEMENT: A painting can represent every era with the illusion of creating a new one. A good painting can be at once self-reflexive and symbolically suggestive with a void and a scream. Through painting, the will of the artist to translate and transcend can be achieved, yet every threat of impending death must be accompanied by a birth of an idea. I am engaged in the exploration of this awkward and essential binary of decadence: dead and alive, light and dark, the beautiful and the grotesque. The purpose of my painting is to pick the over-ripe fruit from the tree, drop it on the ground and fix it back to the branch with the utmost intention to make it beautiful despite my knowing that it will never live in the same season and with the same freshness. The joie de vivre derives from having restored its potential at the intersection of its corruption.
