Neighborhood: Park Slope

Genre:Figurative;

ARTIST STATEMENT: As an art student at Boston University the focus was on observation. We drew and painted from life; it was necessary to consider all aspects of relationship color, value, form, to compose well-made pictures. Later, when I was free to decide for myself what ideas to pursue, observation persisted but broadened. I began to note intensity in people at the beach; while setting up small households they were oblivious to others around them. I enjoyed describing the humor and awkwardness inherent in these scenes, working from drawings and photographs done on site. After many varied series over the years, most recently dance images, I have now returned to the beach as subject. This work differs in content however. I am now focused on the color field aspects of sand and water. Exploring possibilities of color and paint texture inform the paintings. There are still references to human presence although they are subtle. Fragments such as feet, arms or heads punctuate the fields, lending humor and fragility to the pictures.
