Sarah Carpenter
Brooklyn, NY
Neighborhood: Clinton Hill

ARTIST STATEMENT: I map instants: specific moments of discovery, realization and awareness. These moments attract me because of their narrative power - although they are brief and discrete, they are emotional and visceral. I love the ideas of following one’s wanderlust, answering long-standing questions and confronting suddenly-unearthed self-knowledge, as well as the skipped heartbeat or mental “whoosh!” that accompany them. We search, puzzle and sort; we test our endurance; we pine for change or for answers; we’re “whoosh!” junkies.

My wish for my work is that is reflect universal experiences using a visual language that is specific to me. I use colors, patterns and marks like an alphabet - by finding the symbols that occur most frequently, a viewer may crack the code - but I also purposefully obfuscate the scale of events because, after all, the universe is a fractal place. My paintings are landscapes, both geographic and neurological. My favorite stories to read, hear or watch are those that are full enough of details that you can practically smell them and that are crafted with love and attention, and I always try to tell stories in this way.
