Neighborhood: Bushwick

ARTIST STATEMENT: I create seductive yet visceral experiments in photo-media collage, watercolor painting and yarn-based assemblage which express a playful curiosity about the world we inhabit. The power and freedom of the studio process, and the unique kind of investigative research it offers, is key to my process. In my collages of organic materials such as rocks, crystals, fungi and plants I study and recreate these objects using (my own) photographs, watercolor paint and ink. I strive to engage the viewer through a juxtaposition or contradiction between form and subject which, for example, may result in a collage of an American cactus being constructed from photographs of Australian scrub and Mexican cemeteries. I work within a framework that relishes experimentation with process and materials over narrative or realism - consequently a feeling of surreality is developed in these works. In other works which include watercolor paintings and yarn-based assemblages, I seek to experiment further with form and materials. These works also represent organic materials, but the sense of distance from reality is further removed. Colors are unnatural, shapes are distended and askew, unusual symbols and marks are introduced. My intention is to consider objects removed from their typical environments and suspended in space and time.
