ARTIST STATEMENT: “All beauty is a making one of opposites, and the making one
of opposites is what we are going after in ourselves.”

Eli Siegel, Founder of Aesthetic Realism

I love this great principle by poet and critic Eli Siegel. It is the most important thing I know about what makes a work of art beautiful, why it means so much to us, and why artists – including myself – make art. It is a pleasure to be in the midst of studying how the things that I am going after in my work—playfulness and seriousness, surface and depth, sameness and difference, logic and emotion—are the very opposites that I want to put together in my life.

And then of course there’s the sheer joy and difficulty of putting color down and trying to get it right – of seeing how one color affects another – of building subtle or dazzling surface to reveal depth. I will study this for the rest of my life.

I want to thank my teachers at the Aesthetic Realism Foundation, artists Dorothy Koppelman, Chaim Koppelman and Marcia Rackow, for standing for this great knowledge, and for their criticism and encouragement over the years.
