ARTIST STATEMENT: Artistís Statement These drawings are spaces within spaces, structures within landscape. They are observed and imagined man-made places over 1940ís local topographical maps. Both the man-made spaces (dollhouse-inspired forms) and the maps are signifiers of things beyond themselves: the dollhouse forms, of houses, the maps, of the landscape. The maps give a context to the structures. Within the drawings, planes sometimes vibrate between transparent and opaque, and between figure and ground. The surfaces develop texture through the crosshatching of the conte-crayon and the sometimes miniscule details of the map, including surprising place-names that evoke the past, poetry, and layers of history. I am interested in the design and manufacture of the structures and of the maps: material, motif, method of assembly. I pay attention to the hidden messages in the design of objects, with a connection to humanism.
