ARTIST STATEMENT: Each and every painting is a new starting point, a platform from which new pictorial solutions can take shape. I draw on memories and imaginings of color and light. My paintings are spaces for color; color is both material and subject. Its effects are revealed in the process of seeing and perceiving. I mix an acrylic paste into pigment, which allows me to produce paintings with varying degrees of opacity and subtle color shifts. The works in my recent series “A Delicate Balance” focus on the juxtaposition of painterly technique with a sensorial approach to color, light and gesture.
Using brush and palette knife in a spontaneous manner, rejecting and reworking the paint, a many-layered crust forms on the surface of the paintings. The various acts of painting, brushing, scraping, pouring and smearing are highly concentrated. I balance the deliberate with the spontaneous, irregular harmonies with moments of resistance. Through this delicate balance, somewhere between chaos and control, the paintings take shape. The viewer can appreciate their tactile materiality up close and follow various traces of movement in the paintings from a distance. The paintings have an open quality that suggests my compositions are constantly in flux.
