Jeanette May is a photo-based artist using a critical, sometimes playful, approach to investigate
representation itself. Early training as a painter is evident in her carefully arranged photo
compositions and rich color palette.
With objects like handmade fishing nets, flags, hand-painted signs, and rope, I reference
construction that is rooted in the material cultures of sailors, hunting, and America to explore and
subvert notions of masculinity and capitalism
I use modern and historical photo processes ranging from wet plate collodion to digital video to
examine individuals and institutions -- why they came to be, how they are presented to us, and
how they affect our lives.
