Ana Garces Kiley
Brooklyn, NY
Neighborhood: Bushwick

ARTIST STATEMENT: In response to the traditionally opaque canvas, as well as the predominantly male depiction of form and experience throughout the history of Western art, my work transforms the human body into a magical realist vessel for embodying the archetypes of death, desire and the collective unconscious –those very things that make us most human and most enigmatic. By painting on transparent fabric, I have foregone the opacity of the patriarchal canvas, and now stretch both sides of my work with voile and add an acrylic insert to create three diaphanous layers on which I paint, print and etch. I have also taken my work off the wall so that it now suspends in space like a portal. The layers of my work interact, simultaneously weaving image, shadow, moiré, reflection, and emptiness into a composition that investigates a fuller complexity of our ephemeral nature.
