Annie B. Varnot
Brooklyn, NY
Neighborhood: Bedford-Stuyvesant

ARTIST STATEMENT: I accumulate discarded objects and nontraditional materials, transforming them through painstaking methods into sculptures and installations. Both material and process are significant to the content of my work. The origin of this body of work came from finding unusual used lab equipment in a chicken coop while I was on a residency in California. Within the piles of specialized junk, I attached myself to an extra large highly polished silicon wafer, suspended in a plastic wafer carrier labeled "Varian." I was told that these types of disks were used to test the quality of certain samples. Mulling over the damaging effects of industrialization and consumer culture on the natural landscape, I began to imagine the scientific production of a landscape. In these pieces, the mysterious lab samples explode into synthetic wonderlands composed not only of the found scientific objects, but also miscellaneous debris, pvc pipes, multi-colored wires, and electric colored drinking straws linked together, suggesting slime tubes, coral and honeycombs. With references to nature, these lab-scapes are a play on production, reproduction, and the spirit of growth.
