It is where the organic meets the industrial and nature meets science fiction. It involves creating objects, landscapes and environments built on idealism and hope. For example in a drawing titled “Where the Wilderness Evolves,†flying bus stops rush to meet the passengers, walking boats stride across the landscape and a mothership floats above it all.
I look at everyday problems on emotional, physical and social levels and imagine new solutions. I express these possibilities in my drawings. The drawings are sculptural in nature. They are built up from combined shapes of objects such as the curve of a faucet, the back of a chair or a knob on an industrial vacuum cleaner. By combining these aesthetic and functional details I create new objects and systems that I then build up to create imaginary landscapes or alternative universes. These fantastic environments involve the potential for movement, new structures and playful relationships. I think of my work as the sketches or plans of a mad and naïve inventor. I create organic machinery, viral landscapes, mutated transportation devices and cyclical systems from a playground of transformed shapes and bright colors. An example of this is a piece titled “Alchemic Transmogrifier for Distressed Emotions,†in which the fictitious machine takes such emotions as heartache and anger and turns them into bricks for building your next home. Like a mad inventor I never cease to experiment with new materials to put through machines. More...
