ARTIST STATEMENT: I am a contemporary representational painter who focuses on the human experience through the relationship of people to each other and to their environment, mostly in New York City.
In my most recent paintings, a glass window of a bar or café becomes the matrix through which we see people sitting at tables or upon which we see images of the street. At Times Square, the window reflects media images that cut into and mix with the people who are having drinks on the other side of the glass. These media images have become part of our immediate reality and, metaphorically, cut into our collective sense of self.
Also, as we sip our wine and experience a certain self-satisfaction with our lives, troubles out there in the larger world sometimes haunt us; intrusive thoughts of terrorism and random violence come into our minds and become part of our reality.
The narrative of the unseen and the directly experiential come together in a dreamlike surface dissonance.
