Jamie R. Kelty
Brooklyn, NY

ARTIST STATEMENT: Jamie Kelty’s ‘oil constructs’ are short stories that draw on the observer’s experiences and memories. The work affirms the way we build up impressions of character and identity and explore themes of communication, intimacy and isolation. Jamie recycles found objects in an uncommon alliance with oil painting. The recycled and assembled objects embedded in the canvas act as props in these visual stories. Fragments of communications technology (headsets, telephones, ear buds, and cables) are often used, but the message is left for the viewer to decipher. Tearing, scraping, and sewing the canvas, imbues the work with the feeling of a palimpsest. Colors appear as though dragged through the soil, giving the paintings a visceral quality and textural depth, which is at once urban and elemental. Kelty’s small water color collages are more like poems or letters than the assemblages. The small bits of paper, tickets, wrapping, and mementos are collaged onto the watercolors to create unique surface and color. Jamie was born in Germany and raised on a farm in Kansas. Growing up in a rural setting, she developed a strong connection to the earth and to the hand-made. A semester in New Mexico during undergraduate study, opened up the world of painting to her. In 1992, she received a BFA in painting from Fort Hays State University in Kansas. Jamie has taught students of all ages in schools, art centers, shelters, and at the Children’s Museum of the Arts. She has exhibited in a number of gallery shows in New York, Kansas, Missouri, Colorado, New Zealand, Berlin, and Mexico. She has lived in Brooklyn since 1999.
