ARTIST STATEMENT: i make my work to move you because it is beautiful, which to me means it must somehow feel honest. i try to honor art as a way of communicating with others, and value honesty and openness as a way to make art generous.
painting portraits is fundamentally about creating relationships, and paintings of people feel like records of that process of being naked with another person, of asking them to let me see them.
my clothing portraits are another kind of record: monuments to lost friends and lovers with the clothing they've left behind in my life.
my abstractions are a pleasure for me because they record the movement of my own hand. the images are simple but take time to make. to me they are simple and elegant. awkward and balanced. minimal and human at once.
my waving video uses home video footage that i gathered and edited to show every instance in which i waved to the camera growing up. i love how it shares so much of my life in such a short amount of time. it's my own way of opening up to you.
