ARTIST STATEMENT: My work combines fashion, sculpture and watercolor to explore how perception is
hinged on our experience of a self and malleable identity. The experience of physical
ailments, embarrassment, sexuality, and fashion posturing are gateways for thinking
about the self in different terms. My watercolor characters are translucent and
emotive- modeling their anxieties and fantasy world like an inner diagram.
So much daily psychological space is spent on determining ourselves through narratives, or the kinds of people we believe ourselves to be. The loved, the rejected, the beautiful, the ugly, the short, the fat; moral stories abound with how we should understand ourselves. Stories go so far as to precede emotions and we cast ourselves as characters before ever fully investigating the more ambiguous reality of our experience.
