Leigh E. Davis
Brooklyn, NY
Neighborhood: Crown Heights

ARTIST STATEMENT: Navigating the complex line between voyeurism and empathy, my work is both deeply personal and anthropologically rich, often stemming from an all-consuming curiosity about a specific person, community, or place. The subjects of past work span all corners of the human experience, from the devoted brothers of a dying religious order, to the residents of a Brooklyn YWCA, to the inhabitants of a rapidly developing neighborhood in Washington, DC. My camera provides an initial bridge into new communities, allowing me to access these spaces with the goal of helping to tell the stories I find there. Ultimately, the final work is a multimedia exploration generated by the relationship that develops naturally between artist and subject. In recent years, projects have taken the form of shrines, altars, and collections of various objects and images that work together to form a cohesive and immersive installation. To house these works, I have been drawn to sites that present their own spirituality or sense of community, using this intrinsic human quality to complement the stories represented in the installation. The overall work is designed to foster connection between viewers and community members, encouraging conversation about the aspects of humanity that keep us apart and bring us together.
