Leslie C Kerby
Brooklyn, NY
Neighborhood: Boerum Hill

ARTIST STATEMENT: Early in my career, I was a social worker in Appalachian Virginia working with adults ages 18-96. It was a formative experience interacting with individuals and families under emotional circumstances; encounters with clients were like puzzles revealing hidden motives for their actions and the many sides of their personalities.

These experiences inform my work today as I think about the individual as a complex social product. I look at the individual within the context of small social groups and within our global society to create new rhetoric about how we interact, compete or sometimes re-invent ourselves using identity as a “cultural currency." Using humor, I create new perspectives on life that are both reflective of our past and predictive of our future.
