ARTIST STATEMENT: For the past twenty five years Tom Keough has painted in oil or worked in watercolor. Before that Keough worked for over a decade in black and white making pen drawings or linoleum prints. He started to paint in oils in response to the more immediate elements of the world close at hand especially the urban environment of our city and the beauty of the Catskills. His paintings have been shown in solo exhibitions, in the Gallery of the Brooklyn Center for the Urban Environment in Prospect Park, the Hal Bromm Gallery in Manhattan, at the Gallery of the Interchurch Center- the headquarters of the National Council of Churches, and at the Theater for the New City, in Manhattan. Keough has exhibited work extensively in a wide variety of venues including facilities of the United Nations, the U.S. Capital Rotunda, the U.S. Senate Subcommittee Chambers,the Museum Of Modern Art, the Society of Illustrators, the Storefront For Art and Architecture in New York, The Riverside Cathedral, and St Thomas Cathedral in Rockefeller Center, The Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem,the Moenchehaus Museum in Gussler, Germany and The Place/Kayenberg Design Studio in Hamburg. Keough's work has appeared in many periodicals and several textbooks.
The original painting of The Hemlock, was installed, with other large works, at Saint Peter’s Church in the Citicorp building in Manhattan for six months in 2003.The Hemlock has been on display in several locations in New York City. Keough has artwork permanently installed in the collection of the New York Life Insurance Company, the Brooklyn Hospital and the Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture. Recently the Addison Ripley Gallery in Washington D.C. installed a large print of The Hemlock in the U.S. Embassy in Jamaica,West Indies.
