ARTIST STATEMENT: Astrology, self-help, crystal healing, dianetics, ESP, fortune-telling, cults, and secret societies exist in parallel with accepted social institutions. By challenging mainstream beliefs these fringe movements become a new way to understand the world when the existing models fail. Many of these movements cherry pick concepts from across disciplines and distort their ideas to fit their new concept of reality. I employ this same process in my work. By picking idealized states of existence, whether universal or personal, I generate a distorted, self-created world. Through my work, I envision brighter pastures pieced together by future inventions and leftovers from the recent past.

My work takes on a multitude of forms but always points back to technology. Through video, animation, sound, printmaking and installation I explore the residue of the western world’s worship of progress. Using myself as a filter, I embrace concepts of happiness, success and self-improvement, a spectacle that permits the viewer to examine their own definitions of these broad and slippery concepts.

I am interested in how the repetitive tasks presented by the digital world control and consume our time and how these tasks are often misrepresented as democratic, socially enriching and progressive. This is the first in a series of micro videos examining these daily interactions.

Using a familiar lo-fi infomercial format “The True Believer” explores the symbology and language of mainstream, new age, self-help to examine the concept of an idyllic world. The potential and contradictions of a progressive world made possible through technology and optimistic thinking are debated as I examine my own personal failures and attempt to clear my negative thoughts to create my ideal future.
