Catya Plate
Brooklyn, NY
Neighborhood: Williamsburg

ARTIST STATEMENT: The two main concepts in Plate's works are the fragmented human body and fantasy: a close-up look at our anatomical structures paired with the need to invent new beings. Conventional domestic items, clothespins in particular, play a key role here. In 2003, as a serio-comic response to our angst-ridden times, she invented the “Clothespin Freak” character. It collided with the tarot, resulting in a series of 78 drawings and an artist's book called the Clothespin Tarot. Ever since, these Clothespin Freaks have appeared and “evolved” in her paintings, sculptures, sewn objects and animated films.
