ARTIST STATEMENT: Images 1-11 Expanding upon their intrinsic nature, I work intuitively with ordinary materials, to coax out the sculptural qualities inherent in planar materials such as twist ties, felt, foam and aluminum rod. These works explore volumetric drawing in space, akin to musical notes, phrases and pauses. Images 12-13 Ideas and desire collide & collude into thoughtless, even callous juxtapositions. Unchecked, unfiltered. How can one comprehend the utter lack of sensitivity to the placement of brutal images of war juxtaposed next to banal advertising slogans, whose only purpose is to serve late market capitalism at home. Images 14-15 Wappen Field: Work in Progress is a sculpture and sound installation comprised of 6 chrome plated steel helmets, resembling face guards. Each helmet’s discreet speaker animates the room with vocals, extended voice techniques and sounds created specifically for this work. A range of human emotion is given breath in this installation. Images 15-20 My sculpture distills the visual language of clothing to its essential form. Possessing its own grammar and syntax, clothing is examined for its psychological potential to question the signals we send both consciously and subconsciously. I am interested in how we display and mask the body and our selves. Clothing is explored as shelter; both psychic & architectural space. Crystallized & compact, the sculptures are psychological containers that reach deep into collective memory, while referencing design, fashion and cultural cues.
