ARTIST STATEMENT: I create in order to find a way to gather pieces of my childhood lost during my move away from home. To relate my cultural identity to my current setting and environment, I paint without judging, to find a way to fuse all that is familiar to me into a new reality. I then slightly manipulate the image by adding references of my place of origin, Russia. The abrupt separation from my country in my adolescent years created a strong attachment to specific imagery. The nostalgic notes which resonate in my work are often subconscious, but in certain cases i push them to play the main role.
The scenery which i paint and observe naturally changes itself to create a place where the two worlds can coexist. I let my art take me to a place where I can be at peace with my physical surroundings. The recent night paintings I have been working on seem erase most cultural ties, as specific aspects of the landscape are obscured by the darkness.
