Joan Mellon
New York, NY

ARTIST STATEMENT: “Along with painting on stretched canvas, I have always enjoyed working on paper—with pastel, charcoal, graphite, oil paint and occasionally acrylics. In 2009, while thinking about different ways lines could be made, I found myself not only examining the kinds of papers on which to make lines, but exploring ways in which paper itself could be used to create the kinds of lines I wanted to make. This investigation included a series of works on Kitakata rice paper sized with Poly Vinyl Acetate—a series that continues. Whether working on stretched canvas or paper, my work focuses on color within a minimalist aesthetic. A question constant for me is, ‘How does any color—whether it has the intensity of cadmium red, the subtlety of nickel titanium yellow, the variability of graphite, or the ‘non-color’ translucence of rice paper—contain depth?’ It has always been my hope that the work I make provides a place of calm in our increasingly frenetic world. And if, in the process of looking at my work, the viewer also finds humor, that is because it was intended.” Joan Mellon, July 2010
