This body of work plays with the power of the image where woman as image is privileged as a central iconic motif. Original pages from vintage sixties and seventies magazines—a period pertinent to my social and cultural moment—are interrupted with images and phrases culled from a seemingly vast cultural unconscious. Clearly issuing from a desiring subject, this unconscious produces a layer of commentary, free association, or simply disruption. Rescued from the dustbin of history, critical concerns filtered through youth culture, feminism, and consumerism make appearances. The figure of woman as image proliferates while the resulting meanings spill out in to a larger cultural context read as increasingly phantasmagoric.
This ever changing reception of culture is in many ways medium specific. The pictorial magazine is an almost obsolete indulgence, replaced now by a continuous stream of fleeting digital images absorbed by the eye in passing much like a landscape viewed from a window on a speeding train. What might be gleaned from the train window is profoundly influenced by the dreams and memories of the viewer. This work is an attempt to slow down the train just long enough to capture a few signs that, when put in new and unexpected combinations, suggest something of where we've been.
