ARTIST STATEMENT: For the last year I’ve been working on and thinking about
pretty landscape paintings with industrial subject matter.
The working title is Pretty Industrial and the idea came to me
while I was an artist-in-residence at CAC Troy, New York. I
was standing in a desolate warehouse looking out broken
windows that faced the Hudson River. It was a beautiful,
blue-sky day and I realized that the trees I was looking at
were the same trees that I’d seen on the canvases of the
Hudson River School painters. This made me rethink how
we perceive our decaying, industrial landscapes. When I
returned to Brooklyn, I saw the industrial neighborhood
surrounding my studio with fresh eyes and a new interest.
Brooklyn’s working waterways are changing and I felt a need
to document my take on it while I’m here. The Gowanus
Canal and Erie Basin paintings are painted in the studio. I’ve
also included paintings from the warehouse in Troy, NY as
well as plein air pieces from Rehoboth Beach, Delaware that
help inform how I paint in the studio.
