Jennifer V Grimyser

Website: www.jennifergrimyser.com Neighborhood: East Williamsburg ARTIST STATEMENT: Language is used to convey meaning, yet I use text as a means to produce ideas. My work questions our understanding of language. Whether words are constructed or wry phrases are articulated, my practice implements a cross-disciplinary approach. Through visual play between image and text, a secondary satirical interpretation is created that address the complications and ironies in language. In my photographic work, imagery is emphasized as the principle medium, while text is subsequent. The photographic image is used to explore aspects of performance or staging. Language is a flexible medium and in my graphic work, words are the central artistic element. I am interested in how written communication translates visually. Text is used to suggest ambiguity, presenting the success and collapse of communication. In the process of understanding, seeing comes before reading, yet in my work seemingly brief statements merge the textual and the visual into an interdependent relationship.
