ARTIST STATEMENT: The following is taken from an interview I did with The following is taken from an interview I did with Illustrationmundo.com. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- My work is a mixture of elements. On the one hand it is a conversation with others working now and getting influences to respond to and on the other it is the traditional practice of just working with the materials. I like to get lost in the work and try to find out what the paper wants me to do with it. My influences vary quite a bit (at least I think they do). I love really old Mickey Mouse cartoons, they are kind of dark and the references are all out of date and that makes them better in a way. Always love Edward Gorey. Paper and the materials I use are highly influential, I always try to pick materials that I think are beautiful to begin with and have lots of character. A really rough 100% cotton rag paper will change the way that anyone draws, in a good way…maybe? I am influenced by American and European Folk Art and things that are are enigmatic, you can't really put your finger on why you love them so much. I think there is something a little sinister about my work that comes through and that is what people respond to. I think it can be healthy for art to contradict itself somehow, to be honest, to contain duplicity. I also love the Triplets of Belleville and anything that Sylvain Chomet has done. I think I am drawn to animation because it is more about creating characters that have a complete life. I am learning to go with the flow. It is a cliché, but far to often we are fighting against the current when we should be swimming the other way.
