ARTIST STATEMENT: I am an abstract painter,
who loves to make different colors play with and against each other
and to challenge them towards different subtleties in their behaviour and interaction.
I am looking at ways how color can perform a surface or a structuring quality.
The possibilities of showing simultaneously different layers of movements and shifts in planes is what intrigues and incites me about painting.
I love working with oil paint on canvas or on paper for the luminosity of the color.
Attracted to light, to the light which color and paint are emitting, I oppose and superpose layers of color. The way how paint is applied on a surface is therefore crucial for me. Modelling the paint by rubbing it into the surface or by sanding it off is one way. Pouring liquid paint is another. Stains of color and paint are being built up - overlap, accumulate, interwoven with contrasts and correspondences, only to be opened again thereafter.
I have developed techniques of washing off, abrasing or sanding a layer of paint in order to push the color back - back into the primed canvas or the white underground, appearing from an in-between position.
