ARTIST STATEMENT: My artistic practice focuses on participatory/ happening installations/ environments that incorporate sculpture with photography, video and paintings and have a component of audience / viewer collaboration/ participation. Site-specific environments are created, linking local history and culture with edible sculptures and cathartic collaborative destructive elements, often with guest participants that are role-playing with their own agendas. The installations are continually changed throughout their duration, through audience participation without the artistâ€™s involvement.
The effect of natural and created landscape and the perception of normal is explored through the creation of environments that are shifted slightly from expected norms creating a disjuncture. Edible sculptures are created that play with the psychological aspects of their shape and the personal and historical context their colors and flavors evoke. The sculptures being consumed have flavors that do not correspond with the associated flavors of those colors. The theoretical historic tension between sculpture and painting, in combination with collaborative, cathartic, acts of destruction and creation with the formation of new landscapes is also explored. The audience consumes these edible sculptures, change their topography while experiencing internally the conflicting contrasts between color, flavor and their own internal expectations.
I create works that subtly call into question the perception of natural and urban landscapes as unchanging, eternal and self-regulating, untouched by man or normative in function.
