ARTIST STATEMENT: I have a fascination with water; whether it is flowing or merely light reflecting on it's surface. The reason being that water has characteristics of fluidity, rhythm, luminosity, color and movement; qualities I want in my own work.
My recent work focuses on color, light and surface.
The cascading drips have been layered repeatedly until the colors achieve a certain richness and brings to it nuances of structure to it's surface. By using resin, I'm able to give my paintings a certain "wetness" and sheen that other mediums could not achieve in previous series. The bottom edge of each piece protrudes outward like little eddies in a stone riverbed. I use glue to give it structure and transparency while at the same time creating a vessel in the painting, becoming object-like.
Although my fascination with water has sustained my work since 1992, my art is non-representational. I use it merely as a vehicle to start a painting. I believe the works should have it’s own vitality, it’s own “life†and be separate from an illusionary depiction of nature. I must work very fast as the materials' are fast-setting. This immediacy and spontaneity creates a more open dialogue with the invisible, unconscious force to guide my decisions with no predetermined “endâ€.
