Sarah Knouse
Brooklyn, NY

ARTIST STATEMENT: My fascination in our culture’s relationship with decoration and surface treatment plays a large role in my work. Through my current art making practice I explore themes of ornamentation and superficial grandeur as they occur at a domestic scale. I have combined notions of quotidian household surroundings with those of the ephemeral and surreal. Furthered by my experiences as a faux-finish painter and interior decorator in suburban neighborhoods, I am intrigued by the relationships that we as individuals establish with our private spaces and possessions. Throughout my interior design work I spent the vast majority of my time camouflaging pristine drywall and newly manufactured surfaces to mimic a range of artificial materials – from decaying plaster and weathered paint, to glossy marble and fine wood grain. Through these experiences not only have I gained an appreciation for the fleeting nature of contemporary modes of adornment, I have also come to question ideas of the exotic. Aside from generating aesthetic appeal, the objects and processes we employ to dress our homes perform many uniquely important functions. They allow us to in some ways author our own personal histories, and can even serve as projections of our unique ideals and aspirations. I am curious about the place where these constructed ideas and fantasies make contact with real life.

Art Teacher, Julian Krinsky Summer Xploration Program, Bryn Mawr College, Bryn Mawr, PA
In the summer of 2010 I will be instructing 3-D and 2-D arts courses for middle school/early high school students. These courses, entitled “Sculpting Massive Models,” and “Discovering your Inner Artist” consist of intensive lessons for “art majors” and are supplemented by an afternoon creative arts workshop for general-interest students ranging from the construction of cardboard models to computer-aided investigations of Pointillism.

Teaching Assistant, Bucknell University, Lewisburg, PA
In August 2008 through May of 2010 I had the responsibility of assistant-teaching sculpture and introductory drawing courses including ART 150: 3-D Design, ART 250: Projects in Sculpture, ART 348: Advanced Sculpture, and ART 131: Elementary Drawing.

2008 Art Teacher, St. Pius X School, Broomall, PA
Blessed Virgin Mary School, Darby, PA
At this position I planned unique course curriculums for 27 different weekly classes and taught 2-D/ 3-D art making techniques and art history to students grade K-8 at both Philadelphia area schools. I also organized and installed several student art exhibitions and developed a new after school arts program.

2007 Sculpture Teacher, Julian Krinsky Creative and Performing Arts Program, The Shipley School, Bryn Mawr, PA
During both the 2007 and 2008 sessions I developed and taught assignments for both “majoring” and “non-majoring” students grades 1 - 10 in the area of sculpture and prop making. I also organized and installed bi-monthly art exhibitions.

RELATED EXPERIENCE

2011 Collaborating Artist, Our Silent Canvas, Brooklyn, NY
As part of this non-profit arts collective, I am working as a sculptor and set designer for an upcoming production at the Center for Performance Research in Brooklyn, NY. The mission of this creative organization is to provide a diverse audience of community members with the opportunity to experience the newest works of contemporary composers and multimedia visual artists.

2010 Ceramics Instructor, Craft Center, Bucknell University, Lewisburg, PA
In February of 2009 through April of 2010 I taught an extra-curricular ceramics studio course for university students and adult community members alike which focused on hand-built, wheel-thrown, and various other sculptural clay techniques. I was solely responsible for the development and delivery of the curriculum. These courses were filled with students of many diverse ages/backgrounds, and were a great success!

Gallery Assistant, Samek Art Gallery, Bucknell University, Lewisburg, PA
Starting in 2008, I have assisted with the installation and de-installation of traveling exhibitions. I was also responsible for helping to organize the Annual Student Art Exhibition and designing the advertisements for this event.

2007 Designer/Sculptor/Painter, Highfire Designs, Artistic Creations, Bucks County, PA
For these positions I worked very closely with clients in their homes to perform various interior design projects including faux finish paint/plaster and the creation of originally sculpted mantle pieces to meet each customer’s unique requests. I also designed custom-made ceramic tiles and sculptural relief objects for the clientele, in addition to serving as lead faux-finish painter.

2006 Foundry Teaching Assistant, Penn State University, University Park, PA
