ARTIST STATEMENT: artist statement
My studio practice sways between painting and sculpture. My paintings double as concept-tryouts for sculptures while my sculptures illustrate and validate the concepts from my two-dimensional drawings. Painting and sculpture gives me the ability to place an array of structures in space concordantly and meld light, color, and structure together to reveal new and curious forms.
The conceptual underpinnings of my work are based on the pictorial space and structure found in Late Medieval Italian paintings and my ongoing study of our rich architectural heritage which emphasizes on the importance of aesthetic beacons in our environment.
I believe a sense of space is the essence of all senses. My extended goal is to introduce a personal sense of place into public art, which melds spontaneously wrought images, into a space of free association and possibility.
