Joell Baxter
Brooklyn, NY
Neighborhood: Sunset Park

ARTIST STATEMENT: My work moves fluidly between sculpture, printmaking, drawing, and painting. Using screenprinted paper as my primary material, I cut, tear, stack, and weave, pushing against the boundaries of the rectangle, the wall, and the floor. The work recalls the rigorous language of conceptual and minimalist art, while simultaneously engaging the familiar material processes of grade school art projects and the saturated colors of digital space. Building on this history, I am currently exploring the addition of spatial illusion into sculptural forms. Introducing unnecessary illusion into work that is, in fact, three dimensional creates a visual complication that is especially fertile territory for exploration right now, when so much of our visual lives are mediated by screens and pixels.
