Caryn D Cast
Brooklyn, NY
Neighborhood: Bushwick

ARTIST STATEMENT: Caryn Cast's drawings depict imaginative scenes that tell an odd, yet familiar story. She creates them by juxtaposing a character captured in a train of thought with an imaginative yet faintly realistic background. She often paints from dreams, as they represent the humanistic quality in life that she desires to capture - a snapshot borne from the human mind. Cast studied portraiture under a handful of artists, the most notable being a pastel artist in the Gulf Coast of Florida, where she spent her childhood. Looking carefully, you can detect a coastal feel of her figures intermingling with elements of the sea, both in a literal sense and in the way her figures gently float back and forth into the background. Using soft pastels on wood, watercolor paper, mattboard, and found objects, her carefully detailed figures provoke flirtations of passion, fearlessness, wanting, and vulnerability, as well as subtle hints of chicanery, creating a world as if it were a page out of a storybook come to life.
