Cat D Glennon
Brooklyn, NY

ARTIST STATEMENT: My work deals with a generally unspoken urge to be seen not for what we are but for what we want to be. People are largely unaware of the small ways in which they project their desire for power; I use exotic animals to unbutton these concerns in part because animals are familiar but ultimately unknowable, easy to project onto, they are us but not us. This initially resulted an examination of how we mask secret insecurities, wishes, and desires: animals wearing animal costumes, animals who wear too much makeup and have anonymous, promiscuous, occasionally inter-species sex. My current work focuses on this pomp and pageantry while also exploring the more active power grab that accompanies the quest to become something new. Simply being seen as something else is not enough. The goal is to become, to eat the hearts of ones’ enemies to gain their courage; the goal is to win.
