ARTIST STATEMENT: If life is a storm, I paint in the eye of it, enjoying the calm center of a rapidly spinning world, a world sometimes energized by the caprices of popular culture. I explore life’s storms and seasons by painting portraits of iconic figures and abstract paintings – exploding out of the confines of popular society – and working with encaustic, which allows me to build texture, explore vibrant colors, and move quickly, since the paint dries almost instantly. I paint countless layers, strategically layering color on top of color, only to later scrape back and reveal the depth of the painting. At the eye of the storm, I find the calm in the creation of the chaotic.
