ARTIST STATEMENT: This work started as a series of early morning exercises during this time. Out of this, a simple idea, how to reconcile grief and joy, what does that look like? How does someone represent that? I turned to a variety of sources, things that kept coming back to me. The eternal upward reach of fire escaping from the earth. A wheel spinning within a wheel and how that resembles an eye. The feeling of a cave's walls on your fingertips when lost in the dark. The graphic quality of street signs and how they can be an entry point or an exit from the world that surrounds them. So I circle around these thoughts as I make this work. Spending hours filling gradients with pencil, sanding, applying paint, calculating angles, diameters, and circumferences, cutting into panel or polishing layers of hardened urethane. The work follows the ideas which follow the work like some sort of Ouroboros.
