ARTIST STATEMENT: Arturo Meade -- Artists's Statement As an artist, I strive to create work with an ethical, spiritual, and environmental consciousness. Humans are constructors and collaborators by nature, but, in our drive to create, we have become great destructors. Observing this, I have chosen to principally work with material from recycled sources, and to avoid, as much as possible, the use of any massively produced items. I create paper-based series from used books, magazines, maps, newspapers, record albums, and discarded manuscripts, then apply techniques such as collage, paper cut, silkscreen, and drawing to the material. I also build sculptural bodies from found wood and other construction materials. Thematically, my art -- like the materials I use -- is a reflection of human behavior and society. I use second-hand materials, shapes, and ancient symbolism to explore topics like politics, music, corruption, democracy, power, identity, and capitalism in a fictionally anthropological way. Visually, the use of recycled materials is fundamental to my work, as these materials carry their own depth and story. I am also hugely inspired by ancient Mexican symbolism, which I incorporate into many compositions to create a fictional narrative between the old and new times, and to explore the meaning of Mexicanness.
