Steve Savitz
Brooklyn, NY
Neighborhood: Crown Heights

ARTIST STATEMENT: I create art in different styles ranging from abstract expressionist paintings to photography.

A common thread that runs through my work is my interest in depictions of human fallibility and existential crisis. In my world, we are all beautiful losers crumbling beneath forced smiles and life-affirming mantras. Hopefully my works dial into the collective doubts we all have but rarely speak of.

Coming from a filmmaking background, I see my images as comic-tragic narratives. These narratives sometimes include text.

Whether my art is a sea of colors or a tar-pit of grays, I aim for a vantage point where amusing meets disturbing.

My photography series, Chemicals initiates a dialogue that questions the ethical practices of corporations that endanger our health and natural environment.
