ARTIST STATEMENT: My mixed-media paintings are explorations of imagery and emotion as I attempt to make something recognizable or quotidian become radiant. In an earlier series of paintings I made while living in L.A., I focused on figures and settings conveying the frustrations and anxieties common to urban living.
In my more recent works, collected under the titled Life's Journey, I try to communicate the vagaries of life's paths in a way that is less directly related to urban life, rather more generally related to experiences and consequences in general. To portray such differences, I use a wide variety of painterly techniques and mediums. including oils, concrete, spackle and glue.
The figures in my works might be abstracted to some extent, but my basic belief is that I do not distort images. Rather, I depict them as life itself has already distorted them.
